A fundamental part of being Canadian are our Health Care systems. The Canadian Health Act ensures that provinces receive necessary federal funding, and that all Canadian citizens have access to free comprehensive health care. To gain full access to federal funding, provincial governments must ensure they follow these five core pillars
– Public Administration
All provincial and territorial health insurance plans must be operated on a non-profit basis by a public authority.
– Comprehensiveness
All medically necessary services provided by hospitals, physicians, and surgical-dentists must be insured.
– Universality
All eligible residents of a province or territory must be entitled to public health insurance coverage on uniform terms and conditions.
– Portability
Residents moving to another province or territory retain coverage during the transition. Also, coverage is maintained when traveling within Canada or abroad.
– Accessibility
Eligible residents must have reasonable access to insured health services without financial or other barriers (e.g., no extra-billing or user charges).
